Barbie gets a digital face-lift for Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, repackaged for kiddie consumption. The cover art is clearly aimed at selling to princess-obsessed preschoolers, but don't be fooled. The soundtrack is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The dance is choreographed by the Ballet Master in Chief of the New York City Ballet. Needless to say, much can be done with computer graphics that is outside the reach of the stage.
The best thing about this DVD is "The Ballet Dances of Swan Lake" Special Feature. You can view just the dances, learning the moves that makes each one special. My kids and I enjoy dancing along with the characters, while my toddler dictates the names of the moves we attempt to imitate.
If you have a young daughter, this DVD comes highly recommended. Be prepared, however, to invest in a good ballet school and a tutu.
WARNING: Good story-telling requires conflict. There are some moments that may be too intense for your child. Be sure to preview, or view together for the first time - you can assure your child that the good guys won't get hurt in this one.
