At the time of this writing, "What Kind of Cat Are You?!?" is my all-time favorite children's CD. To my astonishment, it is also my children's second favorite CD. My kids and I have diametrically opposed tastes. My 5-year-old loves reggae, which just doesn't trip my trigger. I prefer bebop jazz, for which my son has no love. The one thing we can agree on is Techno. Techno and Billy Jonas. Billy, did you ever think your name would be uttered in the same breath with 'Techno'? Suffice it to say, this album has something for everyone.
Billy Jonas is an accomplished percussionist. You will hear irresistible and sometimes surprising rhythms. No techno, bebop or reggae here. Listen for upbeat, almost tribal melodies. Sense of rhythm develops separately from sense of melody. I consider this music a children's library essential.
If you're curious, my children's absolutely favorite album, as of this writing, is Cathy Fink and Marcy Marker's 'Bon Apetite'. Coincidentally, it is also my second favorite album. Not much reggae or techno on this album, either. By the way, "What Kind of Cat Are You" was runner up the year "Bon Apetite" won the Grammy. Good music is good music.
