» A Clarinet Scale - A Monotonous Necessity!

Like all scales, a clarinet scale is something that you play over and over and over again. It's boring. It's tedious. You hate it. You hate it when you're an adult - so think about how it feels when you are 6-8 years old and really want to work on your pieces of music for band practice or orchestra, and instead are running up and down scales in various keys. » Clarinet Reed Adjustment - A Necessary Skill!

Clarinet reed adjustment must be done properly in order for the sound your clarinet makes to be as clear a tone as possible. Even though the clarinet reed is such a small piece of wood, it can make or break how a piece of music sounds when played on the instrument - even the most talented clarinetist in the world will have a problem sounding professional with a badly fitted reed. A reed that isn't adjusted correctly can completely ruin the tone, and make the clarinet itself much harder to play.

If music is good for you and me, it is also an excellent simulation tool for unborn children. Virtues of prenatal music have been extolled by medical personnel across the world for some time now and more and more expecting mothers are learning the benefits which music has on the development of the child. The first benefit is to the mother itself as it helps her relax which in turn has a positive influence on the baby. The common hormones shared by mother and child are simulated and thus a happy and confident baby is likely to be born to a mother who spends some time listening to prenatal music.

» Paul Austin Kelly - Through Tenderwood

I have to tell you about British sensation Paul Austin Kelly. Just because they're children, doesn't mean they must suffer lo-quality music, right? That's the premise behind Mr. Kelly's work. Paul Austin Kelly knows good music. As an internationally renowned tenor, when he's not on the road performing opera, he's writing high-quality music for kids. Through Tenderwood is a masterpiece. You don't have to have children to enjoy it. It's difficult to review because it's not like any kids' music I've heard before. Mr. Kelly calls it a 'tone poem'. A series of brilliantly written and performed pieces, held together by the young child's recitation of poetical snippets. Don't take my word for it, have a listen. Through Tenderwood has been on the iTunes UK top 10 list, and Mr. Kelly is well-known in UK. He has yet to break the scene in the US. I'm confident that once enough folks have heard his music, he'll do equally well here. Personally, I can't wait to hear his next work of art!

» Star Wars Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith Movie

This is not yet a video, nor is it a kids product. I am, nonetheless, compelled to write a review. In summary: Dads, please ask Mom before allowing junior to view this movie. If she says no, please do listen. WARNING! I'm about to give away part of the ending (as if you can't figure it out): Imagine your five year old watching, wide-eyed, while children are slaughtered, a man's legs are amputated by his best friend, and the same man slips slowly into a river of lava, burning alive, screaming, while his friend watches. The father sitting behind me in the theater walked sheepishly down the aisle while his little guy, slack-jawed and dazed, ruminated on the images he just witnessed. I'm a big Star Wars fan. The movie is what it is. It would have been much better with the element of surprise on its side, but of course, that's not possible. Strip away the eye-popping effects, merchandising and media hype, and Star Wars Revenge of the Sith is mediocre at best. Let's talk about merchandising for a moment. It makes my blood boil that a movie like this would push so hard to small children. Most of the toys garnered huge popularity with the 3+ age group. Please don't bring your little ones to this film, no matter how they beg. I explained to my little Star Wars fanatic that he can see it when he's older, and that seemed to be enough for him. I'll give it 2 stars for the grown-ups who may enjoy the spectacular effects.

    » Barbie Swan Lake

Shop at Amazon.com Ages 2.5-8 Barbie gets a digital face-lift for Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, repackaged for kiddie consumption. The cover art is clearly aimed at selling to princess-obsessed preschoolers, but don't be fooled. The soundtrack is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The dance is choreographed by the Ballet Master in Chief of the New York City Ballet. Needless to say, much can be done with computer graphics that is outside the reach of the stage. The best thing about this DVD is "The Ballet Dances of Swan Lake" Special Feature. You can view just the dances, learning the moves that makes each one special. My kids and I enjoy dancing along with the characters, while my toddler dictates the names of the moves we attempt to imitate. If you have a young daughter, this DVD comes highly recommended. Be prepared, however, to invest in a good ballet school and a tutu. WARNING: Good story-telling requires conflict. There are some moments that may be too intense for your child. Be sure to preview, or view together for the first time - you can assure your child that the good guys won't get hurt in this one.

    » Fantasia 2000

Shop at Amazon.com Ages 2 to 9 This is a montage of animated vignettes, backed by famous composers. Think, music videos of the classics. My preschooler learned to identify key-changes from this movie, with my help. This is a sequel to the original Fantasia release. The single point of overlap is the Sorcerer's apprentice. Some, but not all of the segments contain familiar Disney characters. Beethoven's 5th or, "the ba-na-na-na song", as my toddler jubilantly calls it, is presented with a geometric barrage of color. There are 8 animations, some more stunning than others, and I'll let the rest be a surprise. WARNING: The message of destruction and rebirth is repeated in this DVD. These images may be too intense for the sensitive child. I strongly urge you to preview this or any film before presenting it to your child. My preschooler and I had a long discussion about the cycle of life after a viewing. My toddler, on the other hand, chuckled through the whole thing.

» Dan Zanes: Rocket Ship Beach

Shop at Amazon.com Ages 0-9 Who says children's standards have to be painful? Roll down the windows on the old Ford truck and crank up Sheryl Crow's "Polly Wolly Doodle". Suzanne Vega breathes new life into "Erie Canal". Rasta Father Goose steps in for his old lady with a nursery rhyme medley you'll not soon forget. Add exceptional production values to the mix and you've got a winner. This is one of the best produced children's music album I've ever heard. It's good. That's it.

» Billy Jonas: What Kind of Cat Are You

At the time of this writing, "What Kind of Cat Are You?!?" is my all-time favorite children's CD. To my astonishment, it is also my children's second favorite CD. My kids and I have diametrically opposed tastes. My 5-year-old loves reggae, which just doesn't trip my trigger. I prefer bebop jazz, for which my son has no love. The one thing we can agree on is Techno. Techno and Billy Jonas. Billy, did you ever think your name would be uttered in the same breath with 'Techno'? Suffice it to say, this album has something for everyone. Billy Jonas is an accomplished percussionist. You will hear irresistible and sometimes surprising rhythms. No techno, bebop or reggae here. Listen for upbeat, almost tribal melodies. Sense of rhythm develops separately from sense of melody. I consider this music a children's library essential. If you're curious, my children's absolutely favorite album, as of this writing, is Cathy Fink and Marcy Marker's 'Bon Apetite'. Coincidentally, it is also my second favorite album. Not much reggae or techno on this album, either. By the way, "What Kind of Cat Are You" was runner up the year "Bon Apetite" won the Grammy. Good music is good music. Shop at Amazon.com

    » Sandra Boynton: Philadelphia Chickens

Shop at Amazon.com Ages 4-8 This is a CD/Book set. Both are recommended. First, listen to the CD. You'll be blown away when you find out that's Meryl Streep singing "Nobody Understands Me". I still giggle like a school girl every time I hear her belt out "why does my quickery biffle you so?" Consider this cut next time you see Streep in “Postcards from the Edge”. Unfortunately, the whole show tunes parody thing is wasted on my kids. In fact, my 5-year-old wants to know why Kevin Kline is "very very busy and [has] got a lot to do and [hasn't] got a minute to explain it all to you". I respond, "He's telling Mommy to put things in perspective". "What's ‘perspective’?" "Drink your juicebox." In spite of these more sophisticated punch-lines, this CD remains a family favorite. Even my toddler begs for more. Adorned with Sandra Boynton’s familiar illustrations, the accompanying book is a hit. When my daughter gets a little older, we’ll try playing some of the sheet music in the book. Until then, we’ll look at the pictures and amuse ourselves by trying to guess just exactly what Laura Linney is singing about in "Please, Can I Keep It?".

    » Jumpstart Learning Games Music

Shop at Amazon.com Ages 5-8 My 5 year old asked me, "Mommy, when am I going to start learning music?" I was floored. Filled with hope, I asked, "Are you interested in music now?" "No," he responded, "but I know I have to learn it". Ok, I'll take what I can get. So I set this software up on a computer I bought for $75 on half.com, and away he went. Frankly, I was very impressed with how much fun this game is for an analytical child who's only interest in the arts is "sculpting" with K'nex. JumpStart Music holds his attention for an hour at a time, and he genuinely seems to enjoy it. Of course, its not as much fun as Bionicle, but he does seem to appreciate that he can "learn music" painlessly. I sometimes wonder, forlornly, if he's inh
